I always heard that growing up so I always thought there was something wrong with me. Decades later, after two MIT degrees, I finally discovered during teacher training... I'm a visual learner. That explains why my college classmates who missed lectures wanted to see my notes. I took great notes because when I saw what I was learning, especially when I wrote it, it helped me understand it.
